Trimming That Helps Trees Handle Wind and Heat
Tree trimming is the most common tree service homeowners in Perris ask for, and it is also the one most often done badly. Done right, trimming removes dead and weak wood, opens a crowded crown so wind passes through, lifts low limbs off driveways and walls, and keeps branches away from your roof. Done wrong, it leaves stubs, lion-tailed limbs or topped trunks that regrow weak and break in the next windstorm. Our aim is a tree that looks natural and carries less risk.
What a trim fixes
- Deadwood: dry limbs that can fall without warning and burn easily
- Crowding: crossing and rubbing branches, and too many shoots competing in one spot
- Weight: long, heavy limbs reaching over roofs, pools and patios
- Clearance: branches on the roof, against stucco, over the driveway or blocking a walk
- Shape: one-sided growth from shade or past bad cuts
The local reasons to keep up with it
Summer highs in Perris average close to 97 degrees in July and August, and the area gets only about 10 inches of rain a year. A thirsty tree sheds interior branches and builds deadwood fast. Then the fall Santa Ana winds blow hot and dry, often past 40 mph. A dense, heavy canopy catches that wind, while a thinned crown lets it through. Trimming is also part of fire safety: CAL FIRE's guidance asks for branches at least 10 feet from a chimney and limbs pruned up 6 feet from the ground near homes.
How we prune
We cut at the branch collar instead of flush to the trunk or leaving a stub, which lets the tree seal the wound. We thin by removing whole branches back to their point of origin, not by shearing the outside. As a rule we keep the cut to a modest share of the live canopy in one visit, because heavy pruning in this heat stresses a tree and invites sunburned bark and a flush of weak sprouts. If a tree needs a lot of work, we may suggest spreading it over two seasons.
Why we do not top trees
Topping, cutting big limbs back to stubs to shrink a tree, is still common. It leaves large wounds that decay, and the tree answers with dense, poorly attached shoots that grow back quickly and break easily. If a tree is simply too big for its spot, crown reduction to proper lateral branches is the better option, and sometimes removal and replanting is the honest answer.
Timing
Late fall and winter suit most shade trees here. Clearing deadwood is fine any time, and getting it done before summer heat and fall wind season makes sense. We avoid heavy cuts during the hottest weeks.
Types of Trimming We Do
Each tree gets the cuts it needs, written down on the quote.
Deadwood removal
Dead, broken and hanging limbs cut out of the crown, so they do not fall on people, cars or roofs.
Crown thinning
Selected interior branches removed to cut weight and wind load while keeping the tree's natural shape.
Crown raising
Low limbs lifted for clearance over driveways, walks, sheds and lawns, and to meet defensible space guidance.
Crown reduction
Height or spread brought back to well-placed side branches, the proper alternative to topping.
Roof and wall clearance
Branches pruned back from roofs, chimneys, gutters, stucco walls and block walls.
Fruit and ornamental trees
Citrus, stone fruit, olive and yard trees shaped for size, light and easier picking.

How a Trim Works
1. Walk the trees
We look at each tree with you and agree on the goal: clearance, thinning, deadwood or reduction.
2. Itemized quote
Each tree gets its own line with the cuts described in plain words.
3. Prune
Cuts are made at the branch collar, working from the inside out, with ropes for limbs over structures.
4. Chip and clean
Brush is chipped, the yard is raked and blown, and gutters near the work are cleared of fresh debris.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming
No topping
We reduce trees to proper side branches and say plainly when a tree is too big for its spot.
Tree Trimming Questions
How much of a tree can be trimmed at once?
A common rule is to remove no more than about a quarter of the live canopy in one season, and less on stressed trees. In Perris heat, we lean toward lighter cuts and come back if more is needed.
How often should trees be trimmed?
Most mature shade trees do well with a trim every three to five years. Fast growers such as eucalyptus, and trees near roofs or walls, may need attention every year or two.
What is the difference between thinning and topping?
Thinning removes selected whole branches to lighten a tree while keeping its shape. Topping cuts large limbs to stubs, which leads to decay and weak regrowth. We thin and reduce; we do not top.
Can you trim my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
In California you can generally trim overhanging branches back to the property line, but not in a way that kills or seriously harms the tree. It is wise to talk with your neighbor first. We trim only what you have the right to cut.
