Sycamores in the Washes, Scrub on the Hills

Wildomar has two different landscapes, and our tree service work follows both. California sycamores grow along the riverbeds and washes, while coastal sage scrub, chaparral and poppies cover the hills. The city incorporated in July 2008, and its 11,724 homes sit in a mix of older lots and newer tracts that spread out after Interstate 15 was finished in the early 1980s.

Caring for sycamores

Sycamores are big, fast-growing trees with heavy limbs that often reach out at low angles. In yards near washes they can be the main shade on the lot. We prune them to remove deadwood, reduce overextended limbs, and lift the canopy away from roofs, without the heavy cuts that leave large wounds. Sycamores also shed bark and leaves in quantity, so keeping gutters and roof valleys clear of overhanging branches helps.

Brush on the slopes

Chaparral and sage scrub are adapted to fire, and they burn hot. Homes along Wildomar's hillsides benefit from the full defensible space plan: nothing combustible within five feet, dead plants out within 30 feet, and shrubs thinned and spaced out to 100 feet. On slopes steeper than 20 percent, CAL FIRE suggests spacing shrubs four times their height apart; on slopes above 40 percent, six times.

Removals

Trees that are dead, split or leaning toward a house come down in controlled sections. On wider lots with open ground, we may be able to fell a tree whole, which keeps the cost of the job down. Either way, we leave the site clean.

Stumps and replanting

Grinding the stump lets you replant close to the old spot. If you are replacing a large tree near the house, consider something with a smaller mature size, and keep new trees out of the first few feet next to the walls.

Pepper trees and eucalyptus

If your Wildomar lot has a California pepper tree or a eucalyptus, it needs its own kind of care. Pepper trees grow long, weeping limbs that can drag on roofs and fences, and they benefit from thinning and end-weight reduction. Eucalyptus can shed big limbs with little warning, especially in heat. Both can be kept with regular care, or removed when they have become a risk to the house.

Honey country

Wildomar was once an important place for honey production, and bees still turn up in hollow trunks and palm skirts. If you know of a hive in a tree you want removed, tell us before the visit so it can be handled safely.

Wildomar Notes

  • Recent city. Wildomar incorporated on July 1, 2008, as the 25th city in Riverside County, and had 36,875 residents in 2020.
  • Native plants. Hills support coastal sage scrub, chaparral and California poppy, with California sycamores along riverbeds.
  • Freeway-era growth. Growth returned after the Temecula Valley Freeway (I-15) was completed in the early 1980s; the city had 11,724 housing units in 2020.
  • Shrub spacing on slopes. CAL FIRE recommends shrub spacing of two, four or six times shrub height as slopes go from flat to over 40 percent.

Wildomar Questions

Is it okay to trim a sycamore in summer?

Light deadwood and clearance cuts are fine any time. Larger structural pruning is usually better in the cooler, dormant season, when the tree is under less stress.

How much brush do I need to clear on my hillside?

State guidance covers 100 feet from the home or to the property line. The closest 30 feet need the most attention. We can walk the slope with you and mark what should go.

There are bees in my tree. Can you still remove it?

Let us know ahead of time. An active hive needs to be dealt with before cutting, and we will tell you how we plan to handle it.
