Young Trees, Set Up Right
French Valley grew by about 53 percent between 2010 and 2020, to 35,280 people, and much of our tree service work there is on trees that are still young. It is the most populous census-designated place in Riverside County, with about 9,848 homes and a high share of families: more than half of households had children under 18 in 2020. Newer homes mean newer trees, and the next few years are when those trees are easiest to shape.
Structural pruning for young trees
A nursery tree planted with a new house often has two or three competing tops, crowded branches and limbs growing at tight angles. Left alone, those turn into weak forks that split in wind ten or fifteen years later. Light structural pruning now picks one main leader, removes crossing branches and spaces the main limbs out along the trunk. It takes little time per tree and prevents much bigger work later.
Keeping trees out of tight spaces
New lots are often compact, with trees close to the house, the side yard wall and the neighbors. We keep branches off the roof and away from second-story windows, and raise canopies over walkways and play areas. If a tree was planted somewhere it will never fit, early removal and replacement with a smaller species is easier than waiting.
Removals and stump grinding
Builder-planted trees sometimes fail early from poor root systems, girdling roots from the nursery pot or irrigation problems. If a young tree is dying or leaning, we remove it and grind the stump so you can replant in the same spot with better soil prep.
Open hills nearby
The valley sits below Bachelor Mountain and the Tucalota Hills. Homes at the edge of development may face open slopes with grass and brush. Keep grass mowed short and dead plants cleared on the side facing open land, and make sure the five feet next to the house stays free of anything that burns easily.
Watering young trees
A young tree needs regular deep watering for its first few summers, and lawn sprinklers alone often do not reach deep enough. Many trees that struggle in new neighborhoods are simply short on water during the hottest months. A slow soak at the edge of the root ball, then gradually farther out as the tree grows, helps it build a deeper root system that holds up better in wind.

French Valley Questions
When should I start pruning a young tree?
Usually a year or two after planting, once it has rooted in. Light shaping every couple of years after that keeps it on track.
My builder tree is leaning. Can it be saved?
If it is young and the roots are sound, staking and corrective pruning may help. If the roots are circling or the tree is badly loose in the ground, replacement is usually better.
Does my HOA need to approve tree work?
It depends on your association. Many require approval for removing or replacing front-yard trees. Check before the work is scheduled.
