Horse Properties and Former Groves

Woodcrest is an equestrian community, and tree service there often means working around barns, arenas, paddocks and long driveways. The name comes from the original Woodcrest Acres tract, laid out in 1926 at the crest of the hills, and parts of the community rise above 2,000 feet. Orange groves spread after the Western Municipal Water District was approved in 1955 and brought cheaper water, but most of those groves have since been developed. Leftover grove trees still stand on many lots.

Old citrus and grove trees

Citrus trees that were part of a commercial grove decades ago may now be the only trees on a ranch lot. Some are still productive with a good cleanup: dead wood out, suckers removed, and the canopy opened to light. Others are in decline from age, root problems or years without care. We remove the ones that are done and grind the stumps so the ground can be used for paddocks, gardens or new trees.

Working around animals

On horse properties, falling limbs and loud equipment can spook animals. Before the crew arrives, we ask that horses be moved away from the work area. We keep debris out of paddocks and pick up small cuttings, because some leaves and clippings can be harmful to horses if eaten. Let us know what animals are on the property when you book.

Clearance for trailers and trucks

Horse trailers and feed trucks need height along driveways and gates. We raise limbs over the drive and around turnarounds, and cut back branches that hang over barns, hay storage and arena fencing.

Brush and fire safety

Hilltop lots with open land around them should keep grass mowed to four inches or less and brush thinned out to 100 feet from structures. Keep 10 feet of clearance around outbuildings and wood piles, as CAL FIRE's guidance describes. Woodcrest is unincorporated, so Riverside County's hazard reduction rules apply to vacant parcels here.

Windbreaks along property lines

Rows of tall trees along a ranch property line provide shade and wind protection. Over the years, these rows thicken, collect dead wood and can lean toward a fence or a neighbor's barn. We thin them, remove dead trees from the row, and grind stumps where you want to replant, keeping the break working for your animals.

Removals on larger lots

With more open ground, some trees can be felled whole, which is faster than piecing them down. We check the drop zone, fences and animals first.

Woodcrest Background

  • Hilltop name. The original Woodcrest Acres tract, formed in February 1926, sat at the crest of the hills; some locations rise above 2,000 feet.
  • Citrus era. Approval of the Western Municipal Water District in 1955 made water more affordable and encouraged citrus growth.
  • Groves developed. Agriculture declined from the 1980s, and most of Woodcrest's orange groves have since been developed.
  • Equestrian community. Woodcrest is an equestrian community where many residences include ranches and horses; 89.1 percent of homes are owner-occupied.

Woodcrest Questions

Can you remove an old citrus grove?

Yes. We cut the trees, grind the stumps and haul or chip the debris so the land can be regraded or replanted.

Do I need to move my horses during the work?

Yes, please move them away from the work area. Falling limbs and chainsaws can startle animals, and we want them safe.

Can you raise trees over my driveway for a horse trailer?

Yes. Tell us how tall your rig is, and we will trim for that height plus some room for branch sag.
