Getting Rid of the Stump
Stump grinding is how most stumps in Perris yards get removed. A grinder with a spinning toothed wheel chews the stump into chips down below the soil line, along with the main surface roots near it. It is faster and less destructive than digging the stump out, and it leaves a hole of soft chips and soil you can fill and plant over. We grind fresh stumps right after a removal and old stumps that have been sitting for years.
Why not just leave it?
- Stumps are trip hazards and mower breakers, and they get in the way of new landscaping, pavers or a slab
- Some trees sprout from the stump and roots; pepper trees in particular send up suckers
- Rotting stumps attract termites, ants and fungus
- A stump left in a weedy lot keeps catching dry debris and makes the lot harder to clear every year
How the grinding is done
We check for buried utilities, sprinkler lines and nearby walls first. Then the grinder works across the stump in passes, lowering a few inches at a time until it is well below grade. For planting grass or groundcover, a few inches down is usually enough. If you plan to set a new tree in the same spot or pour concrete over it, tell us, because that takes deeper grinding and more chip removal. Surface roots running across the lawn can be chased and ground out too, priced as a separate line.
Access in Perris yards
Grinders come in sizes, and the gate decides which one fits. Many tract homes have a narrow side yard between a block wall and the house, so we bring a compact machine that fits through a standard gate. On larger lots with wide access, a bigger machine finishes faster. We look at the route at the estimate so there are no surprises.
Palm stumps are different
Palms do not have a woody stump like other trees. Their trunk base is a dense mass of fibers with a large ball of small roots below it. Grinding a palm stump is usually quick, but the fibrous material bulks up and does not break down like wood chips, so we normally haul it away.
Chips and backfill
Grinding leaves a mound of chips and soil roughly the size of the stump, sometimes larger. You can keep it as mulch, or we can haul it away and leave the hole ready for topsoil. Chips settle as they decay, so a patch planted over a fresh grind may sink a little over time; topping it up later fixes that.

How Stump Grinding Works
1. Measure and check access
We measure each stump, look at the gate width and note any sprinklers, walls or lines nearby.
2. Mark utilities
Underground lines are located before grinding, so the wheel stays away from them.
3. Grind below grade
The stump is ground in passes to the depth you need for lawn, planting or paving.
4. Chips handled
Chips are raked into the hole, left as mulch, or hauled, as written on the quote.

Stump Grinding Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Deep enough for what comes next. A few inches below grade works for grass or groundcover. Replanting a tree or pouring concrete over the spot needs deeper grinding, so tell us your plan.
Does stump grinding remove all the roots?
No. It removes the stump and the root flare near it. Long roots stay in the ground and decay over time. Surface roots can be chased and ground for an added cost.
Will the tree grow back after grinding?
Most trees will not. Some species, including pepper trees and some eucalyptus, can sprout from remaining roots. Cutting or pulling the shoots as they appear usually stops them.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, but it is better to remove the chips, add fresh soil, or plant a short distance away from the old root zone, since decaying wood ties up nitrogen as it breaks down.
