Frequently Asked Questions
Tree Service Questions
How much does tree service cost in Perris?
It depends on the tree, its height and access. National figures from HomeGuide put tree trimming at about $400 to $900 per tree on average, tree removal at about $400 to $1,200, palm trimming at about $100 to $650, and grinding a first stump at about $120 to $400. Your written estimate is the price for your property.
Do I need permission to remove a tree in Perris?
Rules depend on where the tree is. A tree in the parkway along the street may belong to the city, a tree in a planned community may need HOA approval, and conditions on newer developments can cover landscaping. We confirm what applies to your address before scheduling a removal.
When should trees be trimmed in Perris?
Late fall through winter is a good window for most shade trees, since growth slows and heat stress is lower. Clearing deadwood and dead palm fronds before summer and before the fall wind season makes sense too. Avoid heavy pruning in the hottest weeks, when freshly exposed bark can sunburn.
How often do palm trees need trimming?
HomeGuide's palm guide says once or twice a year, depending on species, condition and how long since the last trim. Fan palms grow fast and build up dead fronds quickly, so many owners here trim yearly.
Can you trim branches touching the power line to my house?
No. California rules limit work near energized lines to qualified line-clearance tree trimmers. We will point out the problem and help you contact the electric utility, then handle the rest of the tree.
What is weed abatement?
It is clearing dry weeds, brush and other fire fuel from a parcel, often after the fire department or city sends a notice. In Riverside County Fire's program for unincorporated areas, a hazard cleared within 30 days of the Notice of Violation needs no further action. We mow, cut, rake and haul the material.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Coverage depends on your policy. Insurers usually look at whether a fallen tree damaged a covered structure and why it fell. We give you an itemized invoice and photos you can send to your carrier, but the claim decision is theirs.
Tree Removal Questions
Can a tree be removed without damaging my lawn or yard?
Most of the time, yes. Sectional removal with rigging keeps heavy wood from slamming into the ground, and we lay plywood where equipment crosses soft turf. A large log dropped on open ground can leave a dent, so we plan drop zones carefully.
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
Not unless the quote says so. Removal leaves a stump cut close to the ground. Grinding is a separate line so you can choose whether you need it.
Will you remove a tree that is near power lines?
We remove the parts of the tree that are a safe distance from the lines. Branches touching or close to energized lines must be cleared by a qualified line-clearance trimmer for the utility first. We help you make that call.
How long does a tree removal take?
A small tree in an open yard can be done in an hour or two. A large eucalyptus over a house, with rigging and haul-off, can take a full day. Your estimate includes a time frame.
Should I remove a tree that is leaning?
A lean the tree grew into over many years is often fine. A new lean, cracked soil or lifted roots on one side after a wind event is a warning sign, and that tree should be looked at soon.
Tree Trimming Questions
How much of a tree can be trimmed at once?
A common rule is to remove no more than about a quarter of the live canopy in one season, and less on stressed trees. In Perris heat, we lean toward lighter cuts and come back if more is needed.
How often should trees be trimmed?
Most mature shade trees do well with a trim every three to five years. Fast growers such as eucalyptus, and trees near roofs or walls, may need attention every year or two.
What is the difference between thinning and topping?
Thinning removes selected whole branches to lighten a tree while keeping its shape. Topping cuts large limbs to stubs, which leads to decay and weak regrowth. We thin and reduce; we do not top.
Can you trim my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
In California you can generally trim overhanging branches back to the property line, but not in a way that kills or seriously harms the tree. It is wise to talk with your neighbor first. We trim only what you have the right to cut.
Palm Tree Trimming Questions
How often should palm trees be trimmed?
Once or twice a year for most palms, according to HomeGuide. Fast-growing fan palms in Perris often need it every year to keep the dead skirt from building up.
Is it bad to cut green palm fronds?
Removing a few that block a walkway or touch a roof is fine. Stripping the head down to a small tuft weakens the palm because green fronds produce its food. We leave fronds that are above horizontal.
When is a good time to trim palms?
Many owners schedule trimming in late spring or early summer, after flowering starts, so seed stalks come off before they ripen. Clearing dead fronds before fall wind season is also smart.
Do you remove palm trees too?
Yes. Dead, leaning or oversized palms are removed in sections and hauled away. See our tree removal page for details and typical costs.
Stump Grinding Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Deep enough for what comes next. A few inches below grade works for grass or groundcover. Replanting a tree or pouring concrete over the spot needs deeper grinding, so tell us your plan.
Does stump grinding remove all the roots?
No. It removes the stump and the root flare near it. Long roots stay in the ground and decay over time. Surface roots can be chased and ground for an added cost.
Will the tree grow back after grinding?
Most trees will not. Some species, including pepper trees and some eucalyptus, can sprout from remaining roots. Cutting or pulling the shoots as they appear usually stops them.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, but it is better to remove the chips, add fresh soil, or plant a short distance away from the old root zone, since decaying wood ties up nitrogen as it breaks down.
Fire Clearance & Weed Abatement Questions
I got a weed abatement notice. What should I do?
Read it for the deadline and the specific clearing it asks for, then get the work scheduled. If it came from Riverside County Fire, the department says that clearing the hazard within 30 days of the Notice of Violation means no further action is needed. Keep before and after photos.
How short do weeds need to be cut?
Follow your notice first. For defensible space around homes, CAL FIRE's guidance is annual grass at 4 inches or less in the 30 to 100 foot zone.
Can I burn the weeds instead of hauling them?
Usually not. Riverside County Fire suspended residential burning of landscape debris in the county's State Responsibility Area starting May 1, 2026. Chipping and hauling are the normal routes.
Do I need to clear my lot if no one lives on it?
Yes. Riverside County Fire says owners are responsible for maintaining their property throughout the year, and vacant parcels with flammable vegetation are a main focus of hazard reduction.
Emergency Tree Service Questions
What should I do if a tree falls on a power line?
Stay away, keep others back and call 911 and the electric utility. Do not touch the tree or try to move it. Once the utility has made the lines safe, we can remove the tree.
Does insurance cover a fallen tree?
It depends on your policy. Insurers usually consider whether the tree damaged a covered structure and whether it fell from wind or from neglect. We provide an itemized invoice and photos for your claim.
Why does emergency tree removal cost more?
The work is more dangerous and harder to control. A tree resting on a roof is under tension and must be taken apart in a careful order, often with extra rigging. HomeGuide puts urgent removal at two to three times the standard rate.
Can a cracked limb wait until next week?
If it hangs over a roof, a walkway, a car or a play area, it should not wait. If it is over open ground with nobody under it, keep people away and call us to schedule.
