Clearing Fire Fuel Before It Becomes a Problem
Fire clearance and weed abatement in Perris means removing the dry fuel that builds up on lots and around homes in a valley that gets about 10 inches of rain a year and hot summers. Winter rain grows a crop of grasses, mustard and tumbleweeds; by late spring it is dry and ready to burn. We cut, rake, chip and haul that material, and we take care of the tree side of fire safety too: dead trees, low limbs, branches over roofs and dead palm skirts.
The county program
Fire service in Perris comes from the Riverside County Fire Department, under a contract with the city that began in 1983. The department's Hazard Reduction office runs the county's weed and hazard abatement program under Ordinance 695, which applies to parcels in unincorporated territory, such as Romoland, Nuevo, Homeland and Mead Valley. It says property owners are responsible for maintaining their land throughout the year. Parcels with hazardous or flammable vegetation, including tumbleweeds, can receive a Notice of Violation and Order to Abate. According to the department, if the hazard is cleared before or within 30 days after that notice, no further action is required. Under County Ordinance 695 the appeal window is 15 calendar days from the postmark. The department also suggests documenting the work with before and after photos. Parcels inside Perris city limits may be handled under city rules instead, so check with the city if you are unsure. If you have a notice, the instructions on it control, so read it closely and send us a copy.
Defensible space around homes
CAL FIRE's defensible space guidance divides the area around a building into zones:
- Zone 0, the first 5 feet: hard surfaces such as gravel, pavers or concrete instead of bark or mulch
- Zone 1, 5 to 30 feet: dead plants and dry vegetation removed, and trees spaced so branches stay about 10 feet from other trees on flat ground
- Zone 2, 30 to 100 feet: fuel reduced, with annual grass cut to 4 inches or less
- Trees near the house: branches at least 10 feet from any chimney or stovepipe, and limbs pruned up at least 6 feet from the ground
Riverside County Fire also points owners in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones to 100 feet of defensible space. The state issued updated hazard zone maps for the county's local areas in March 2025, so it is worth checking where your parcel falls.
Why the timing matters
The fall Santa Ana winds are the worst fire weather of the year, with gusts that often top 40 mph and humidity that can drop below 10 percent. Clearing in spring, after the grass dries but before the heat, is easier and safer than racing a notice deadline in summer. Owners of vacant lots also tend to see regrowth after a wet winter, so a second pass may be needed.
Disposal
Burning brush is not an option most of the year. Starting May 1, 2026, Riverside County Fire suspended residential burning of landscape debris in the county's State Responsibility Area until conditions improve. We chip what can be chipped and haul the rest away.
Mowing equipment and sparks
Metal blades striking rock can spark in dry grass, and the county notes that operators of equipment that starts a fire can be held liable for suppression costs. We work in the cooler part of the day when we can, keep water and an extinguisher on hand, and clear rocky ground with tools suited to it.
Clearance Work We Handle
We match the scope to your notice, your parcel and the guidance that applies.
Vacant lot weed abatement
Dry grass, mustard and tumbleweeds cut low and raked or hauled across the whole parcel or the required strips.
Defensible space clearing
Brush, dead plants and dry debris removed around the home in the zones CAL FIRE describes.
Limbing up and roof clearance
Tree limbs raised off the ground and cut back from roofs, chimneys and eaves.
Dead tree and palm skirt removal
Dead trees removed and dry palm skirts taken down, since both are heavy fuel.
Haul-off and chipping
Material chipped on site or hauled away, since burning is suspended for much of the year.
Before and after photos
Photos of the cleared parcel you can keep on file in case your work is questioned.

Fire Clearance & Weed Abatement Questions
I got a weed abatement notice. What should I do?
Read it for the deadline and the specific clearing it asks for, then get the work scheduled. If it came from Riverside County Fire, the department says that clearing the hazard within 30 days of the Notice of Violation means no further action is needed. Keep before and after photos.
How short do weeds need to be cut?
Follow your notice first. For defensible space around homes, CAL FIRE's guidance is annual grass at 4 inches or less in the 30 to 100 foot zone.
Can I burn the weeds instead of hauling them?
Usually not. Riverside County Fire suspended residential burning of landscape debris in the county's State Responsibility Area starting May 1, 2026. Chipping and hauling are the normal routes.
Do I need to clear my lot if no one lives on it?
Yes. Riverside County Fire says owners are responsible for maintaining their property throughout the year, and vacant parcels with flammable vegetation are a main focus of hazard reduction.
