Getting Trees Ready for Wind Season

Temecula gets strong, dry northeast Santa Ana winds from late fall into winter, and preparing trees for them is a big part of our tree service work in the city. A tree that has not been thinned or cleared of deadwood catches more wind and sheds more limbs. Most Temecula neighborhoods were built after the 1985 completion of Interstate 15 set off a subdivision boom, so a lot of the city's trees are now large, mature and due for care.

Wind-ready trimming

Before the windy months, we focus on the parts of a tree most likely to fail:

  • Dead and broken limbs that will come loose first
  • Long, heavy branches reaching over roofs and driveways
  • Dense canopies that act like a sail
  • Branches with weak, tight crotches or cracks

Thinning lets wind pass through instead of pushing on a solid crown. We do not top trees, which creates weak regrowth that breaks even more easily.

Palms

Palms are part of the landscape in many Temecula neighborhoods and commercial streets. Dead fronds loosen in wind and can drop from a height. A yearly cleanup removes the skirt, the brown fronds and seed stalks.

When a storm takes a limb

If wind brings down a limb or tree on your property, keep people away from it, and stay well back from any wires it touches. Call us with photos if you can. We cut the weight off structures first and work in an order that keeps the remaining pieces stable.

Wine country and larger lots

East of the city limits, Temecula Valley Wine Country has nearly 50 wineries and over 3,500 acres of vineyards. Homes on bigger parcels out that way often have windbreaks, older shade trees and open ground that needs seasonal clearing. We handle removals, trimming and brush work there as well as in town.

Keeping trees off the roof

Limbs that touch the roof wear shingles and tiles, drop leaves into gutters and give rodents a bridge onto the house. We cut them back to leave several feet of clearance from roofs and walls, and at least 10 feet from chimneys, as CAL FIRE's guidance recommends. On lots that face open hills, that clearance also helps during fire season.

Stump grinding

After a removal, grinding the stump below the surface lets you put the space back to use. We clean up the grindings or leave them as mulch, whichever you prefer.

Temecula Questions

When should I trim before Santa Ana season?

Late summer into early fall is a good window, before the strongest wind events. Deadwood and clearance cuts can be done any time, but earlier is better.

Will thinning really help in wind?

Yes. A thinned canopy lets wind pass through and puts less force on limbs and the trunk. Removing dead and cracked branches also takes away the parts most likely to fall.

Do you handle trees on vineyard or ranch properties?

Yes. We work on larger parcels, including windbreaks, big shade trees and brush clearing.
