A City With a Long Tree History
Riverside has been planting trees for a long time, and that history drives much of the tree service work in the city. The first orange trees went in around 1871, and by 1882 almost half of California's more than half a million citrus trees grew in Riverside. Victoria Avenue, a tree-lined boulevard first developed in 1892, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Older neighborhoods across the city carry large, mature trees that need skilled care.
Pruning mature trees
Old trees respond poorly to heavy cuts. With a large, established tree, we aim to do as little as needed: remove deadwood, reduce the limbs that threaten roofs or wires, and clear crossing or rubbing branches. Large wounds on old trees close slowly and invite decay, so we make smaller, well-placed cuts and spread bigger work over more than one visit when that is better for the tree.
Palms
Tall palms in older Riverside yards need regular care. We trim dead fronds and seed stalks and keep the green crown intact. Palms that have not been cleaned in years can have a thick skirt that takes time and care to remove.
Street and parkway trees
Some trees in front of Riverside homes are in the public parkway. Before trimming or removing a tree between the sidewalk and the street, check with the City of Riverside about who is responsible for it and whether a permit is needed. Trees fully on your property are your call.
Heat, wind and fire
Riverside reaches 100 degrees about 22 days a year and has hit 118 degrees three times. Most rain falls between November and April, so trees spend months without it. FEMA ranks Riverside County among the highest-risk areas for wildfire in California. Riverside manages its own local fire hazard severity zone information, so homes near the hills, such as Box Springs Mountain or Mount Rubidoux, should check their zone with the city.
Signs a mature tree needs attention
- Dead branches in the upper crown
- Fungus or soft wood at the base or along the trunk
- Cracks where major limbs join
- A new lean or lifted soil on one side
- Heavy limbs over the roof, driveway or street
If you see any of these on an older tree, have it looked at before the windy season.
Removals and stumps
When a mature tree has failed, has serious decay or is beyond saving, we take it down in rigged sections over homes and fences, then grind the stump. Old trees often have large surface roots, so we grind out the main ones around the trunk too.

Riverside Questions
Can you prune a very old tree without harming it?
Yes, by keeping cuts small and removing only what is needed. We focus on deadwood and clearance first and avoid stripping the interior or topping.
Who handles the tree in my parkway?
Parkway trees may belong to the city. Contact the City of Riverside before trimming or removing one so you know who is responsible and whether a permit is needed.
Can you remove a big tree in a tight backyard?
Yes. We take it apart from the top in sections, lower each piece by rope and carry the wood out through the side yard if needed.
