Tree Care at the Edge of the Wildlife Area

Lakeview is a small community, about 550 homes in 2020, and its tree service needs come from open land on almost every side. It takes its name from nearby Mystic Lake, which sits in the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, a California Department of Fish and Wildlife preserve of more than 20,000 acres between Gilman Springs Road and Lake Perris. The Lakeview Mountains rise to the south. Wind crosses that open country with little to slow it down.

Windbreak rows

Rows of tall trees along a property line are usually there to block wind and dust. As they age, the trees in a row compete with each other, drop limbs and sometimes lean as a group. We thin and deadwood windbreaks so wind passes through instead of pushing on a solid wall of branches, and we remove the individual trees that are dead or failing so the row keeps doing its job.

Removing what is past saving

A dead tree near a home, a barn or a fence line is a problem waiting for the next windy day. We take it down in sections when there is something below to protect, and fell it whole where the ground is clear. Wood can be left as firewood rounds or chipped and hauled.

Stumps on old rows and pastures

When a windbreak tree comes out, its stump sits right on the line where you might want a new fence or a replacement tree. Grinding removes it below grade. If you are replanting in the same row, we pull back the grindings so new roots start in soil rather than wood chips.

Weeds every spring

Lakeview is unincorporated, so Riverside County's hazard reduction program covers it. Vacant parcels can be ordered cleared along the road edge and near neighbors' buildings, typically in a 100-foot strip under Ordinance 695. We cut, rake and remove the growth so the lot stays clear into summer.

Trees around barns and outbuildings

Rural lots often have trees leaning over a barn, a hay cover or a workshop. Limbs on a metal roof wear it down, and a falling branch can punch through. We cut those limbs back to the trunk or a strong side branch, and keep 10 feet clear around wood piles and outbuildings, which matches CAL FIRE's guidance for the outer defensible space zone.

Birds and nesting season

The wildlife area next door draws more than 300 bird species. Before heavy trimming or removal in spring, we look for active nests. If a nest is active, the work may need to wait or be scaled back for a few weeks.

Lakeview Questions

Should I top my windbreak to make it shorter?

Topping causes weak, crowded regrowth that breaks in wind. Thinning and removing the worst trees in the row is a better way to reduce wind load and keep the break working.

Do you work around nesting birds?

Yes. We check for active nests before major cuts in spring and adjust the schedule when one is found.

Can you grind a whole row of stumps?

Yes. Rows are efficient to grind because the machine moves straight down the line. Tell us how many stumps and roughly how wide.
