Mature Landscapes Need Steady Care

Sun City has some of the oldest planned landscaping in the Menifee area, and much of the tree service work there is about caring for trees that have been in the ground a long time. Del Webb began grading the community in December 1961 as a master-planned neighborhood for residents over 55, and it became part of the City of Menifee in 2008. With about 11,962 housing units and a median build year of 1990, the area mixes early homes with later additions, and the trees reflect both.

Palms come first

If your Sun City lot has tall palms, they need attention every year or so. A Mexican fan palm can grow to around 82 feet, and if nobody trims it, the dead fronds stay attached and form a heavy skirt down the trunk. That skirt shelters rats, scorpions and wasps, and dry fronds can fall in wind. Our palm work removes the skirt and the brown fronds, cuts flower and seed stalks, and leaves the healthy green crown alone. We do not use climbing spikes on palms we are only trimming, because the holes they leave do not heal.

Older shade trees

Trees that have grown for decades often carry long, heavy limbs reaching over roofs, patios and walkways. A careful reduction shortens those limbs to strong side branches instead of chopping them. We also look for signs of decay at old pruning wounds and at the base, and we will tell you plainly if a tree is past the point where trimming helps.

Keeping the job easy on you

Many owners here prefer to keep the work simple. We explain the plan before we start, protect the lawn and paths where we can, rake and blow the yard when we finish, and haul away every branch. Nobody needs to climb a ladder, move debris or deal with a green bin full of fronds. If you are not home during the work, we can send photos afterward.

When removal is the answer

Some older trees decline from root damage, poor earlier pruning or drought. When a tree is dead or leaning toward the house, we remove it in sections and lower the pieces with ropes. Stump grinding afterward takes the stump below the soil line so the spot can be planted with something smaller.

Watering and heat

The area has a dry-summer climate, and trees with shallow roots near lawns can struggle when irrigation is cut back. Ask us during the visit about deep watering for the trees you want to keep, especially before summer.

Sun City Questions

How often do palms in Sun City need trimming?

Most fan palms need a cleanup about once a year to keep the dead fronds and seed stalks off. If a palm has been skipped for several years, the first trim takes longer because the skirt is thick.

Will you haul everything away?

Yes. Fronds, branches and wood chips leave with us, and we clean up the yard before we go.

Can you tell me if my old tree is safe?

We look at the trunk, base, major limbs and canopy and tell you what we see. If a tree shows serious decay or a structural crack, we will say so and explain the options.
