Old Ranch Trees and New Plans

Romoland started as farmland, and a lot of the tree service work there still deals with what the farms left behind. In 1925 the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company laid out the area as Romola Farms and sold small ranches of four to five acres, where families grew figs and grapes. Many of those parcels have since been split, built on or left partly open, and the old trees, stumps and windbreaks are still in place.

Stumps are the big one here

When an old fig or a dead windbreak tree comes out, the stump is what stops you from using the ground. A stump grinder chews the trunk and the main roots down below the surface, leaving a mix of chips and soil. On a larger lot we can work through several stumps in one visit, then rake the grindings into the hole or haul them off, your choice. If you plan to build, pave or set a fence line, tell us, and we will go deeper where the new work will sit.

Removing tired orchard and windbreak trees

Farm trees were planted for production or shelter, not for being next to a house. Over time they hollow out, split at old pruning cuts or lean. We take them down in pieces when they are close to a home or a power line, and drop them whole only where the ground is open and clear. The wood can be cut into rounds for you or chipped and hauled.

Weeds and dry grass on open ground

With more land than a typical tract lot, many Romoland owners deal with seasonal weed growth across a big area. The part of Romoland that stayed outside Menifee is unincorporated, and Riverside County's hazardous vegetation ordinance can require a 100-foot cleared strip along a vacant parcel's road edge and next to neighboring structures. A notice from the county typically gives 30 days to finish the work. We mow, cut brush and remove the material.

Trimming what you want to keep

Not every old tree needs to go. A mature tree that is sound can be thinned, cleared of deadwood and raised off the driveway. We will tell you which trees look healthy enough to keep and which ones are a poor bet.

City or county?

In 2008 a large share of Romoland became part of the City of Menifee. If you are not sure which side of the line your parcel is on, a property tax bill or the county's parcel lookup will tell you, and that decides whose rules apply.

Romoland Background

  • Farm roots. In 1925 the area was developed as Romola Farms, with small 4 to 5 acre ranches growing figs and grapes.
  • Split jurisdiction. A significant portion of Romoland became part of the City of Menifee on October 1, 2008; the rest is an unincorporated CDP.
  • Part rural. At the 2020 census, 41.4 percent of Romoland residents lived in rural areas, and the CDP covered about 2.6 square miles.
  • County weed rule. Riverside County Ordinance 695 can require a 100-foot cleared strip at a vacant parcel's road edge, usually within 30 days of a notice.

Romoland Questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Usually several inches below the soil surface, which is enough for lawn or planting. If you plan a slab, a fence post or a footing in that spot, tell us and we will grind deeper and chase the bigger roots.

Can you clear an old fig or vineyard row?

Yes. We cut the plants, grind the stumps and remove the debris so the ground can be graded or replanted.

What happens if I ignore a weed abatement notice?

Under the county ordinance, the county can have the work done and bill you, and unpaid costs can be added to the property tax bill. Acting within the notice period avoids that.
