Menifee Trees Are Growing Up With the City

Menifee became a city on October 1, 2008, and its tree service needs reflect how quickly it has filled in since. The census counted 102,527 people in 2020, and much of the area grew as a master-planned community in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The trees planted with those homes are now big enough to lift sidewalks, rub on roofs and shade out lawns, which is why trimming is the most common request we get in Menifee.

Trimming trees that came with the house

Builders tend to plant fast-growing shade trees in narrow parkways and small backyards. Twenty or thirty years later, those trees can be wider than the space they were given. A good trim for that situation is not a hard cut back. We thin the canopy, remove limbs that lean over the roof or the neighbor's side, raise the lower branches off walkways and cars, and take out dead wood. Topping a tree, cutting every limb back to stubs, leads to weak regrowth, so we avoid it.

Timing in a hot, dry place

Menifee averages about 12.5 inches of rain a year, and summer temperatures can pass 105 degrees. Heavy pruning in the hottest weeks adds stress, so larger structural cuts are usually better scheduled for the cooler months. Light deadwood removal and clearance trims can be done any time.

The hills on the city's edges

Menifee is not flat everywhere. The Menifee Hills form a ridge about two miles long that tops out near 2,141 feet, and Bell Mountain reaches about 1,848 feet. Homes that back up to hillsides and open ground have a different list: brush to cut, dead limbs that face the slope, and trees that need spacing from each other and from the house. CAL FIRE's guidance asks for at least 10 feet between tree canopies on flat ground and more on steeper slopes, up to 30 feet on grades over 40 percent.

Removals and stump grinding

Some tract trees simply outgrow the yard. When roots are breaking up hardscape or the tree is declining, removal and replanting with a smaller species can make more sense than repeated cutting. We take trees down in controlled pieces over fences and roofs, then grind the stump so the area can be reused.

Communities inside the city

Menifee includes Sun City, Quail Valley and part of Romoland, each with its own mix of lot sizes and tree ages. Tell us which part of town you are in and what is on the lot, and we will plan the visit around it. If you live in an HOA tract, check whether your association has rules about tree removal or replacement before we schedule the work.

Menifee Questions

How often should tract trees in Menifee be trimmed?

Most shade trees do well with a structural trim every two to four years, with lighter cleanup in between if limbs start touching the roof. Fast growers may need it sooner.

Will you cut my tree back hard so I do not have to trim it again for a while?

We do not top trees. Hard cuts trigger a flush of weak sprouts that grow back quickly and break more easily. Thinning and reduction cuts last longer and keep the tree healthier.

I back up to open land. What should I clear?

Start with dead brush, dry grass and limbs within about six feet of the ground near your home. We can walk the property line with you and explain what we would remove and why.
